What do you do better than anyone else?

What unique gifts do you have to offer the world?


If you’re like most people, including me, you have a hard time answering these questions, don’t you?

Part of the problem is that we spend so much time reading blog posts, articles, and Facebook posts from other experts, that it’s sometimes hard to envision ourselves as the go-to authority.

How do you compete with someone else in the same arena who’s already making it happen?


Stop worrying about what other people are doing. Stop reading so many blogs and following others.

Take some time for self-reflection. No one has the exact combination of talents and gifts wrapped in your personality and style.

Next, do some investigative work. Put on your detective hat, and figure out where there’s a need for you and what you offer.

Then bundle it up into a service package, get a good copywriter (probably you) to describe it, and set up a marketing system to unveil it to the world.

One of the best, and quickest, ways to float your ideas? Get feedback from a mentor and peers.

I happen to know where you can get that.

Let me ask you. If you had to declare, right here and now, that you were the world’s foremost authority on something, what would it be?

It doesn’t necessarily have to be true (yet), but maybe something you’re aiming for, like “I’m the world’s foremost authority on writing brilliant back-cover copy for soon-to-be bestselling books.”

    Hi Steve! I’m the worlds most foremost authority on “nails”. I’ve been in the beauty industry since ’93 specifically doing nails and it’s my niche. However, I’m burnt out and not satisfied with actually performing nail services anymore. I went back to school 1.5 years ago to pursue my degree in marketing and I aspire to be a freelance copywriter. I love the beauty industry and have a lot of connections and expertise there, I’d like to pursue attaining clients in this niche, kind of having the best of two worlds, right? Steve, I would love your insight on this!

      This has serious potential. Do you know how many independent beauty and nail salons there are, just across the United States!? Think about this. Most of them do pretty well just from word-of-mouth advertising, repeat business, and maybe occasional space ads. Possibly an online presence, too. But very few of them have their own marketing team because they’re just not big enough, so they’re really winging it.

      You position yourself as the one-woman, insider ad agency/marketing team for beauty and nail salons that don’t have time to do their own marketing (don’t say “don’t know how to,” of course) and don’t want the retainer fees or big expense of a typical agency. Plus you know the business inside and out.

      Brainstorm business name ideas for this, Michelle. If you want to put our two heads together on it sometime, schedule a call with me. Create a knockout website. Write a “bait piece”/free report, like “11 Low-cost salon marketing ideas that will keep your shop booked solid” or something (that’s not very good, it’s late and I’m just thinking off the cuff here.) You get the idea.

    Steve, I’d have to call myself an authority on unlikely comparisons – especially if there’s a kookie story involved, I write more content about copywriting than anything, but there are only so many new copywriting revelations to write about. Rather than reinvent the wheel, I’m called to put a fresh spin on it. Sometimes that’s even more challenging than sharing a new concept.

    I have yet to come across another article that compares Columbo’s interrogation style to prospecting.

    I haven’t seen anyone else encourage copywriters to take a page out of Jim Henson’s book when they’re stumped for ideas.

    I’m sure someone has compared fishing with attracting customers, but not the way my mom did it. (She showed up at the fishing hole with nothing but a strand of fishing line and a hook and caught more fish than my brothers with all their fancy lures and rods – i.e., know what your customer wants.)

    I’d have to say that’s my favorite part of writing – comparing two seemingly unconnected concepts so learning is fun, and if you don’t learn anything new, at least you’ve been entertained (also a la Jim Henson).

    That was a great question to ask when so many of us have such a tough time selling ourselves!

    Hi Steve! I’m the worlds most foremost authority on changing your lifestyle towards better health! Since my significant others health scare and resulting open heart surgery I found myself researching and learning everything I could about diet change and removing added sodium from your diet, supplements that would aid in reversing heart disease, juicing to better health. I will be making that the focus on my blog.

    Steve, I always love your articles. For a new copywriter trying to find oneself, and definitely having a lot of uncertainty about how to make a go of it. I’d say that I’d like to be the foremost authority in providing clarity to prospective clients about how valuable and important good copy (and use of a professional copywriter) is to their success. Does that make sense?

      I get what you’re saying as a “foremost authority,” but ironically, your “providing clarity …” may be a bit unclear to prospects. How about focus on the end result of that for clients? “I’m the foremost authority on writing clear messages that bring in more business.” That’s even too vague, I think, but simpler. Think of a project and what exactly you did for that client.

      We can talk further about this sometime, but hope you get the idea.

As you know, i’ve been a fan of yours for many many years (way over 20 now!) and i love seeing you make such a great impact in so many other people’s businesses and lives. In answer to your question: What unique gifts do you have to offer the world? I create a space (at the Abundant Living Retreat) where people get the very rare opportunity to completely unplug from their normal routine and fully plug into themselves. In doing that, they make a remarkable shift and live a clearer more authentic version of themselves.
